The Process of Driveway Paving

January 12, 2024

When is the right time to upgrade a worn-out tar or asphalt driveway? According to The Spruce, a renowned home improvement advice platform, the average asphalt driveway lasts anywhere from 15 to 20 years. A smooth, newly paved driveway can increase curb appeal and make coming home much more enjoyable without having to maneuver around potholes and cracks. Here's an overview of what you can expect during a typical driveway paving services project.

Preparing the Site

An experienced residential paving contractor will know how to properly prepare the site before laying down any new pavement. This may involve excavating and grading the existing surface. The ground underneath your new driveway should be compacted thoroughly to prevent sinking or cracking in the future. Any drainage issues should also be addressed at this time before pouring new asphalt. Proper site preparation goes a long way toward creating a smooth, lasting driveway.

Installing the New Surface

Once the base is prepared, it's time for the new asphalt or tar pavement to be laid. Your contractor will make sure the dimensions match what you originally asked for in terms of width and length. Setting the forms correctly for pavers is an extremely important step. The tar or asphalt mix is then poured and leveled using special tools to ensure an even surface. Any decorative touches can be added at this point as well.

Finishing Touches

After allowing adequate time for the new pavement to cure properly, the forms are removed from the driveway and the edges are cleaned up nicely. A quality paving contractor will pay close attention to detail when finishing the driveway, making sure the edges are smooth and even with no large gaps or areas of overpour. If desired, a protective sealer can be applied to help enhance the color and stain resistance of decorated driveways. Any necessary drainage components should also be installed like grates or trenches, if part of the original plan.
